The 8-piece construction and sewn-down brim are traditional features inspired by the iconic newsboy cap, which in turn took its cues from the Scottish bonnet-style hats and Irish flat caps worn by farmers and laborers of the 14th-century. When those same workers eventually immigrated to the U.S.A. they brought their hats with them, which quickly caught on.
